Next Fest doubled in size, and the winners earned less
Steam's October demo festival had about 7,300 games, up from 4,400 in June. With that many, even the most successful demos gained far fewer wishlists and followers than the top demos did a few months ago.
ContextSteam Next Fest is Valve's week-long event, held a few times a year, where unreleased games offer free demos on the store front page. Wishlists are the main signal of how well a game will launch.
GameDiscoverCo counted over 7,300 demos, 66.6% more than June's roughly 4,400 and well above the just over 5,000 it expected. Its estimate for the typical top-ten wishlist gain during the week is about +80k, down 44% from +143k in June. Games ranked 11 to 30 added roughly 30k to 50k, against 40k to 78k in June.
Followers, a smaller signal, fell harder. A game in the top 10% gained about 63 followers, against 121 in June and 173 in October 2025. Making the top 20 by peak concurrent players took only about 1,500 players at once.
GameDiscoverCo's reading: bigger studios moved their big reveals away from a crowded event, October was slower overall, and most of the week's hits already had momentum from earlier demos. The festival amplified attention more than it created it.

Technical details
GameDiscoverCo's own ranking by unique players put Worst Class Ever first with about 600,000 players, followed by Probably Stolen, Find The Needle, Fart Together and ArcheAge Chronicles. Find The Needle and similar idle or desktop companion games run in the background, which inflates play counts.
The +80k and +143k figures are GameDiscoverCo's estimates for a typical top-ten game, from its own wishlist tracking; Valve does not publish wishlist numbers. The chart shows the ten largest gains for individual games.
Why it mattersA Next Fest slot is no longer a launch plan by itself. Teams that arrive with a demo already played, streamed and talked about elsewhere are the ones that rise; the rest are one of 7,300.
For youPlan the action RPG's demo around an earlier, smaller showcase or a creator push weeks before a Next Fest, and treat the fest as the second push, not the first. Budget for a +30k to +50k week, not +100k.
- wishlist
- A player's request to be told when a Steam game launches or goes on sale; studios use the count to predict first-week sales.
- followers
- Players who follow a game's Steam page to see its news in their feed, a smaller and stronger sign of interest than a wishlist.
- concurrent players
- How many people are playing at the same moment, as opposed to how many played over a day or a week.
